THE NORMAL HEART review

I saw AAI The Necessary Theatre's performance of The Normal Heart. It was not just on appreciation of the theater industry; it had opened my senses on the understanding and fighting the stigma caused by the scare of HIV/AIDS virus. This play is just for one weekend so you better watch it from July 3 - 5, 2015 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza.
The play is staged in a very simple way. With two towers that project different scenes in New York at the rise of the disease in the 1980s. When everyone didn't know what to do and judge the gay population of spreading the disease. When most of the gays are scared of what's gonna happen, Ned Weeks (Bart Guingona) has to stand up and make the voice heard and protect those left.
The cast, composed of Topper Fabregas, TJ Trinidad, Nor Domingo, Red Concepcion, Jef Flores, Richard Cunanan and Roselyn Perez, amazingly and effectively able to reach the audience on the storyline. The gestures are clean, conversations hooks you and immerses in your feelings for the people portrayed. For TJ Trinidad's first time as a stage actor, he gives his lines very well and looks like he's done quite of this before. He's better than on TV.

After the press preview, it was a sensible and very significant dialogue with them and the audience. Though it seems that some of the dialogues are presented with humor, the issue is very very serious. And not just the issue of AIDS is the enemy, but the society that neglects individuals that deserve equal rights and treatment. It also presents the sad reality that giving false judgments can start inside within the organization that is eager to fight.

Based on Larry Kramer's novel and HBO-adaptation, The Normal Heart left me with the message of hope when all could be united for the cause. A great contribution to humanity when all can understand. Crossing fingers for a longer run to educate more.

MAX movie review

I felt so happy watching Max last night. If you're looking for a family movie this week, this is the perfect flick to go to especially if you're fond of dogs. The story is not just about any dog, giving his utmost loyalty to his human and giving his trust to the new owner.
Max is a Belgian Malinois, a precision-trained breed selected by the Marine Corps of the US. Running at great speed and even a pit bull tires behind it, still catching up a rushing bicycle and surpasses it. But what breaks your heart is when is first owner, Kyle (Robbie Amell) dies in an operation in Afghanistan, Max is very much upset and gives even more sobs at the funeral.
But I am actually amazed how Max reconnects his new owner to his family, Justin played by Josh Wiggins, and making me want to have a dog again. Max shows vivid emotions with barks and dog lovers can understand the twinkle in his eyes. It really gives you the #feels. There are some times that he gives a joke and hitches him with a girl.
A very touching story about friendship and loyalty, proving that trust no boundaries. Many would even agree that dogs are better companions than humans. Max is definitely recommended to watch.

Max opens June 26, 2015 in theaters nationwide, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures (Philippines).

RAK: 4th run and it's still fresh

Rak of Aegis makes its fourth run starting tomorrow, June 17 at the PETA Theater Center and it gives new additions to the 11-time awardee at the recently concluded Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards.
Director Maribel Legarda keeps experimenting on the show that really doesn't disappoint viewers show after show. In fact, each show is never the same as the previous one that also keeps the audience coming back and getting surprised with the cast's ad libs. I love how each one of them can inject humor but still catch the essence of the musical.

The family of Rak grows bigger and bigger with new cast. And PETA is proud to announce the inclusion of OPM icon Renz Verano as Kiel in the cast. A newcomer in the theater industry, hope that he'll give you more electrifying rendition of Aegis songs. He replaces Robert Sena and alternates with theater actor Lorenz Martinez and OJ Mariano. Adding more powerhouse cast, The Company's Sweet Plantado makes her role as Mary Jane replacing Isay Alvarez-Sena and alternates with Kalila Aguilos. New Tolits will be played by Benj Manalo, and the ensemble is joined by thespians Teetin Villanueva, Via Antonio, Raflesia Bravo and Roi Calilong.
Renz Verano plays Kiel in Rak of Aegis
They're also featuring Sayang Na Sayang, another high-pitched song from Aegis and I am really curious on how they are going to insert it in the repertoire. I'm guessing that it will be on Kiel and Mary Jane's exchange. If you're not familiar with the song, here it is in videoke version:
Para Kay Aileen is also featured in the musical. Is this intentionally made for the musical? Cool.

Rak of Aegis plays tonight until August 16 from Tuesdays to Fridays (8PM) and Saturdays and Sundays (3PM and 8PM). Totalling 62 shows for this run only, adding to the 100+ shows from the previous run, only at the PETA Theater Center in Quezon City.

Something very pink is coming back

It will be very exciting if a Tony Award winning musical returns on stage. A very reliable source said it is not impossible. The talented cast would have to wax anew their legs and stretch those heels and muscles with the exhausting moves a they strut in the dance routines of the musical. I learned that they all will be back along with the other cast parading on fab costumes and sheer talent.
There can be no other reason why it would be back except for the high interest of people who want to watch it. I totally agree with that. Aside from the fun and entertaining men on heels, the main characters consists of a couple who everyone should watch. I remember even movie director was proud to see the both of them and commented that the two revealed the artistry in it. It also received standing ovations in all shows during its first run.

According to my source, Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium is already reserved from this August and rehearsals start in July. If you got a hint of what this is, leave a comment below.
